City of Boston Tree Lighting

The start of the holiday season
Omni Parker House Boston Common

Each year since 1971, Nova Scotia has given Boston a tree as a thank you for the city’s response following the 1917 Halifax Explosion. This tradition includes a performance by a Waycobah First Nation drum group and a Cape Breton fiddler and bagpiper. Even Santa Claus will make an appearance at this special event! Join The Skating Club of Boston at The Boston Common Frog Pond for a free figure skating ice show featuring national and international competitive figure skaters, soloists, groups and Team Excel Synchronized Skating and Theatre On Ice of Boston teams. Following the show, join Mayor Marty Walsh for The Boston Common Tree Lighting ceremony to mark the start of the holiday season.

  • Festivities begin at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday December 1, 2016.
  • Tree Lighting at 8:00 p.m. at Boston Common
  • Public skating on Frog Pond will be open to the public after the show (admission costs apply).
