J.C. SNEAD

Our tournament host, J.C. Snead, has enjoyed a successful career as a professional golfer, a sport he didn’t embrace until his early 20s. Growing up, the Hot Springs native was a standout athlete, excelling and earning state honors in baseball, basketball and football. In 1961, he entered the world of professional sports with the Washington Senators farm system, hitting 44 home runs over the course of three years. His natural athleticism extended to golf and in 1968, he joined the PGA.

During his career, J.C. competed in more than 1,000 PGA Tour events, achieving eight wins on the PGA Tour and four on the Senior PGA Tour. A runner-up in the 1973 Masters and the 1978 US Open, J.C. won his first major title in 1995 at the Ford Senior Players Championship when he defeated Jack Nicklaus in a playoff. J.C. played for the U.S. in three Ryder Cups (1971, ‘73 and ‘75) amassing a 9-2-0 record which ranks 4th all-time with an 80% win rate. His longevity allowed him to compete from 1968-1990 on the PGA Tour, retaining his card for 22 years. His career is also highlighted with a playoff win against Seve Ballesteros at the 1987 Westchester Classic and the 2002 Greater Baltimore Classic, where he made a 10-foot putt for par on the 18th hole to avert a four-way playoff.

In 2003, J.C. was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2017, he was inducted into the Virginia Golf Hall of Fame.
